Mary Kaun-English
Firing
GOONZOYLE POTTERY

Following on from her many years of running workshops at Portland Studios and her various Art workshops throughout Surrey, Mary’s workshops will be conducted at her studio at Goonzoyle in Kehelland, Cornwall. This studio space offers the ability to facilitate a range of workshops specialising in ceramics, including residential and non-residential courses in Alternative Kilns and Firing Techniques. The studio comprises of approximately 100square meters of studio space with a throwing wheel, gas kiln and an electric kiln. There is an upper paddock at the studio, with acres of land to use for experimental kilns. Workshops will run from Easter through October. The North Cliffs of Cornwall, overlooking the Atlantic coast, is a 5 min drive (30 min walk) away and Tehidy Woods a 20 min walk – to help with inspiration and relaxation.

Information regarding all workshops will be posted on Mary’s Artists Facebook Page when established.

'It was a pleasure to work with Mary. The students thoroughly enjoyed the ceramic sessions and were all pleased with their results. They really responded to her enthusiasm and creativity.'
Imogen Hartridge, Rosebery School

'My time spent weekly in the studio with Mary is the best therapy ever. I get to experiment with clay and my understanding of glazing and the firing process has left me wanting to learn more. Mary passed the first test that I had subconsciously set her with flying colours – she didn’t bat an eyelid when I arrived at my first class and declared I wanted to build a large jug – I was expecting to be gently persuaded to learn to walk before running – but was allowed to run; such fun.'
Gwyneth Kastell

I feel passionate about exposing both children and adults to the process of sculpture. Expressing oneself through this medium is not only therapeutic but also forces the student to observe their environment with a more inquiring mind.

Weekly Ceramic Sessions

Workshop sessions are held Monday-Friday; morning session 10am-1pm, afternoon session 2pm-5pm, Wednesday evening 7pm-10pm. Each session will cost £20 – this will include the use of a fully equipped studio instruction, all tools, use of reference material, a throwing wheel and drying/storage space. The studio is located in beautiful surroundings and has ample space to accommodate 8 students with additional space outside available during dry weather to work or have a tea/coffee break.

Clay will be available to purchase by the bag or half bag and the cost of firing your work in a large electric kiln will be split according to quantity of the work included.

Each student will be taught individually, working with hand building techniques or on the wheel, at their own pace. Alternatively if there is a particular project you have in mind, we can work together to realise that vision.

Throughout the year there will be opportunities to fire your work using alternative methods including Pit-firing, Barrel Firing, Smoke firing, Raku firing and Gas firing.

Please contact me for any additional information or make an appointment to come and look at the facilities at Goonzoyle Pottery and talk through your personal requirements.
